1 day, 400 users and 700,000 mouse positions broadcast
We had a few minor teething problems and rolled out 4 updates during the day to fix issues that were only apparent with high loads, but so far everything has been working pretty successfully with and we've had some great feedback. Many thanks are in order for the PALGN forum members who have put up with the progressive bug fixes.
The one thing that has surprised me during the launch, is the passion a lot of people have felt towards the application. In the last 8 or so years that I've worked on web applications, the most common reaction towards a launch has been general apathy. thatsmymouse seems to either inspire either voracious hatred or absolute love. Opinions seem to be split fairly evenly down the middle (possibly leaning slightly towards good). I was honestly expecting it to be less well received. All new technologies inherently encourage resistance. I don't think that means that they shouldn't be attempted - it just means that they need time before they are widely accepted. thatsmymouse is easy to permanently shut down, so if people really do hate the system they can completely separate themselves from it
Giving the system this early limited beta behind PALGN's registration barrier has been a great opportunity. It's already help to reinvent some of the projects for the next stage of the program and re-order priorities, without having to worry about load issues.
The next major update should be out early next week. You'll love it - maybe.
